The Future of Audio Education in Primary and Secondary Public Schools

How do we train the next generation of engineers? This session will examine the current climate of public education while highlighting a successful K-12 public school music production and engineering program in the United States. Using the web-based DAW, students starting at the age of 8 are learning essential audio engineering terms, recording techniques, and multi-instrument skills for producing, composing and recording music. Based on a hybrid model, this example curriculum blends fundamental audio engineering skills with state and national standards for music education. Learn how music technology is creating more opportunities for diversity, accessibility and inclusion in public education while fostering students' creativity and excitement for audio engineering.

Giving every student equal access to making music.

Digital composition tools are an easy way to bring music into a classroom of students who consider technology as essential as breathing. Music technology is the glue that connects instrumental/compositional technique to the sound students understand and relate to. This technology includes audio-making software that lets every student, regardless of musical ability, explore valuable learning partnerships and author his or her own musical experience. Tools encourage design thinking through students’ natural curiosity, and encourage new forms of problem solving through recreating and invention.

Maplewood Public Schools, Maplewood, MN

Students use Launchpads alongside Ableton Live to create their own arrangements, as well as condenser microphones to record their own raps and songs using Soundtrap

Hanover Public Middle School, Hanover, MA

Students learn about the history of hip hop and try their hand at an interactive turntable!

Pioneer Charter School of Science, Boston, MA
